Hugh Shurley

I’m drawn to things left behind—old photographs, worn papers, natural objects, and traces of lives nearly erased by time. These fragments become the starting point for photographs, collages, artist books, and small constructed worlds.

Rather than documenting what was, my work explores what might have been. I’m interested in the space between memory and invention, where forgotten stories can take on new life and ordinary objects reveal unexpected mysteries.

Living and working in the Bay Area has shaped my sensitivity to atmosphere and place. Across my work, I explore themes of memory, perception, and quiet discovery.

Earlier photographic collages have been exhibited throughout the United States, including at the Arnot Art Museum, Tampa Gallery of Photographic Arts, Camerawork SF, and the Bolinas Museum. My work has also appeared in Rolling Stone, Premiere, and Genre Magazine.

Whether through photography, collage, books, or constructed environments, I continue to explore the hidden stories within ordinary objects and the subtle ways the past remains present.
