On Thursday, March 13, 2025 the AOPR Photo Group held a special speaker event at Point Richmond Gallery featuring Chilean-Argentinian photojournalist Carlos Barria.

Carlos has spent more than 20 years with Reuters, covering breaking news around the world including conflicts and social unrest in Asia, Europe, the Middle East, and the Americas. His work history includes stints embedded with U.S. troops in Iraq and Afghanistan, coverage of the devastation from several natural disasters, including Hurricane Katrina, the 2010 earthquake in Haiti, and the 2011 tsunami and nuclear power plant meltdown in Japan. Past postings have taken him to Miami, Shanghai, China, and Santiago, Chile, and more recently he worked as a member of the White House press pool, documenting the presidencies of Barack Obama, Donald Trump, Joe Biden, and the most recent election and inauguration.
His images capture the full range of the human condition with dignity, sensitivity, beauty and humor. Viewing his work, it is easy to understand why he and his team won a Pulitzer in 2019. Carlos currently lives in the Bay Area and looks after West Coast coverage for Reuters, focusing on climate change and immigration.
A video replay of the event is available for viewing on the AOPR YouTube channel https://youtu.be/3RACKWF1PrQ . Huge thanks to gallery owner Margi Sullivan who graciously hosted and provided the venue space, and to Sharon Taylor-Ward, who organized the event. I wasn't able to get to Carlos Barria's talk at the gallery, but I was able to watch the it thanks to someone's taking the time and effort to video it. What an interesting life and career Carlos has had; I learned so much from his far-flung travels, documentary information and amazing images--thank you Sharon, Rich and Carlos. And of course Margi Sullivan for hosting at her gallery.
