"Art & About" visits NIAD

AOPR members discovered NIAD (Nurturing Independence Through Artistic Development) in Richmond, at the first “ART & ABOUT” excursion in September.
NIAD (since 1982) is a vibrant center for artists with disabilities to explore, experiment, create, show, and sell their artwork. We had a guided visit with director Lucy Zimmerman and development director Caitlin Gleeson; meeting artists and enjoying art on every available surface. Artists make drawings, prints, paintings, and 3D work in several different media, including ceramics. Even the parking lot is full of art, including an impressive ceramic fountain made by NIAD artists.
The place is buzzing with creativity, and brings a lot of smiles from visitors, staff, and artists alike. The “ART & ABOUT” group came away from their visit inspired and uplifted by the joy and freedom expressed in the art, and in talking with artists who were happy to discuss their work.
Anyone can visit the store and gallery at NIAD at 551 23rd Street, Richmond and/or set up a visit to the studio space. For more information about NIAD, go to https://niadart.org/pages/the-niad-story.

We welcome your ideas for future excursions! Our group is self-directed with no formal membership or leaders. Every activity is suggested and hosted by someone who has the joy and energy to suggest it. That someone could be you!
